US Open: Jannik Sinner takes down Taylor Fritz in the final

It was a clash between World No. 1 and American No. 1 in the US Open men's final yesterday in Flushing Meadows. The Italian, Jannik Sinner, handled the American, Taylor Fritz, in a well-played, albeit swift, match 6-3, 6-4, 7-5.

After winning the other hard court Slam earlier this year at the Australian Open, Sinner has now succeeded at another Slam in New York cementing his status as the man-to-beat in men's tennis right now.

“Incredible, no? So many big wins for me this season. Starting off with Australia and playing so well there which gave me confidence,” said Sinner. “The work never stops. I know I can still improve... I can’t wait for my continued process.”

During the final, the stands were packed with celebs including Taylor Swift, Travis Kelce, Dustin Hoffman, Anna Wintour, and Matthew McConaughey. Of course, there were plenty of cheers for the American Taylor Fritz from the New York crowd.

But it wasn't enough to provide momentum for the Cali-born, Miami-based resident. Spectactors were hoping to witness the first American man to capture a home Slam since Andy Roddick did it back in 2003. But it didn't happen.

“I feel like American fans have been wanting a men's champion for a long time, and I don't know, I'm pretty upset with how I played,” Fritz said to reporters after the match. “I feel like I almost let a lot of people down.”

Nevertheless, Fritz struck a positive note too in his post-match comments. He explained, "Sometimes it's taken me some time to get to a certain achievement, but I've always felt like once I've done something, I gain a lot of confidence that I can do it again.”
