About Florida Tennis Magazine

Florida Tennis magazine was launched in 1992 by Jim Martz, dean of tennis writers in Florida and a vice president of the U.S. Tennis Writers Association. Previously he was the Miami Herald's tennis writer for 18 years and contributed to several national and international publications. He edited the book "50 Love, Advantage Florida," which chronicles the first 50 years of USTA Florida. He co-authored famed tennis coach Rick Macci's book "Macci Magic: Extracting the Best from Yourself and Others" and he authored "Safe Tennis: How to Train and Play to Avoid Injury and Stay Healthy".

Why Florida Tennis?

Our mission is to promote the sport that improves people's lives. According to the New York Times, the best sport for a longer life is tennis. Tennis is growing in Florida!

According to the USTA Florida 2023 Tennis Participation Summary Report (prepared by the Tennis Industry Association), tennis has grown by over half a million participants since 2018 — reaching a record high of more than 1.6 million who've played tennis in the past year.

Florida tennis players log more time playing tennis than any other state — averaging 32.5 days on court last year. And Florida players are the most serious about the game — the state has the highest ratio of “core” players playing tennis 10+ days (57%) versus “casual” players playing 1-9 days (43%) than anywhere else. After all, over 50,000 participants play in USTA Florida leagues. And there are over 1,000 sanctioned tournaments statewide.
