Tough day for top American men at Miami Open; women pull through

Yesterday was jam-packed with great matches at the Miami Open. On the men's side of the draw, top American players had a tough day at the office. On the women's side, American women turned out to save the day.

Thiago Seyboth Wild defeated Taylor Fritz 6-3, 6-4. Christopher O'Connell ousted Frances Tiafoe 7-5, 7-6(5). And Tommy Paul retired with an ankle injury. Even young hopeful Alex Michelson suffered a tough loss by way of Tallon Griekspoor 7-6(5), 6-7(7), 6-4. 

That said, two American men pulled through. Sebastian Korda beat Roberto Bautista Agut (Spain) 6-7(2), 6-3, 6-4. And, in our pick for match of day, Chris Eubanks took down Dan Evans 7-6(3), 3-6, 7-6(7) in a thriller. American fans will be pulling for Ben Shelton this morning when he faces off against Martin Landaluce at 11am in the Grandstand.

On the women's side, former grand slam winner, Naomi Osaka, continued her return to form overcoming Elina Svitolina, 6-2 7-6(5). Asked about her Miami win, Osaka said, "Everyone was so loud and vocal. It just felt like Miami. It was really cool to play on that court.”

American women pulled through as well. Jessica Pegula defeated Lin Zhu 6-4, 4-1 (retired). Madison Keys knocked out Xinyu Wang 6-4, 7-5(5). And, Danielle Collins took down Anastasia Potapova 6-2, 6-2. American fans will definitely be rooting Coco Gauff at noon when she plays against Oceane Dodin on the stadium court today.
