The Korda Dynasty: First father-son duo to win the same title in ATP Tour history
Aug 08, 2024
Sebastian Korda took home his biggest title at the Mubadala Citi DC Open over first-time finalist Flavio Cobolli. The exciting 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 match made history. It turns out that his father Petr Korda also won the D.C. title back in 1992.
The 24-year-old from Bradenton, Florida is also the first American to win in D.C. since Andy Roddick in 2007. Korda's history-making win in D.C. pushes him up to a career-high PIF ATP Ranking of No. 18. The win showcases an impressive Korda tennis dynasty as the father-son duo are the first in ATP Tour history to both win the same title.
"I've been coming to this tournament since I was a teenager," Korda said during his trophy speech. "My dad used to coach Radek Stepanek, who also won here in 2011. We have a lot of history with this tournament, and obviously one of my biggest goals was one day coming here and hopefully winning the tournament and putting my name up there on the stadium."

Knowing his father won the title in 1992, Korda felt the pressure throughout the tournament. In his post-match press conference, he explained, "Every time I walk on center court, I look at 1992. I think it's pretty special that my dad won here. Obviously, as soon as I won and I sat down in the chair, yeah, I just looked up there, just thought about my dad, my whole family, just how proud they always say they are of me. Just really cool to put my name up there as well."
Korda also spoke about his emotions after the win. He said, "Yeah, I mean, I cried a little bit. Yeah, pretty emotional. So many times I've practiced or played on center court here. Get to see my dad in '92 always right across from where you sit down. It's pretty cool to finally put my name up there, as well. Hopefully he comes with me next year just to be here and experience this special moment."

Florida Tennis reached out to 56-year old Petr Korda to get feedback on his son's achievement in D.C. The elder Korda retired from pro tennis in 2005 after reaching a career high ATP singles ranking of world No. 2 amassing 10 career titles including the Australian Open.
"It's fantastic. I'm very pleased for him. He [Sebastian] put in a lot of work coming into this tournament, so I'm very pleased. And seeing him, you know, lifting the trophy, and especially in in DC... it means quite a lot to both of us," Korda said.
"It's a great feeling to have us, both of us, winning the same tournament. So his name and my name will be at the stadium," Korda explained. "I'm very proud of him. You know, he's the one who wrote this [into] history."
