J.J. Wolf Leads US Open Wild Card Challenge

J.J. Wolf has surged into the lead in the USTA’s US Open Wild Card Challenge after winning the ATP Challenger 125 event in Vancouver.

The 27-year-old American secured his sixth ATP Challenger title at the Vancouver Open, giving him 147 Challenge points after Week 3. Wolf now leads Michael Zheng by 87 points in the race for a US Open main draw wild card.

The run marks another major step in Wolf’s comeback after a serious shoulder injury sidelined the former Top 40 player for nearly a year.

Wolf’s comeback has also carried a strong Florida connection. He lists South Florida as a home base on Instagram, and his return to competition this year has included several stops around the state.

He won a $15,000 event in Naples without dropping a set before competing in Sarasota and, in May, continued his return at the Mardy Fish Children’s Foundation Tennis Championships in Vero Beach, where Florida Tennis covered his comeback. Fast forward three months later — Wolf's title in Vancouver has him in pole position to potentially earn his way back into the US Open main draw.

Wolf, who reached a career-high ranking of No. 39 in 2023, is currently ranked No. 282. He has twice reached the third round of the US Open and previously won the USTA US Open Wild Card Challenge in 2022, when he went on to reach the third round in New York.

After Week 3, Wolf leads the men’s standings with 147 points, followed by Michael Zheng, ranked No. 113, with 60 points and Andres Martin, ranked No. 340, with 57.

The men’s wild card will go to the American player with the highest cumulative total of ATP singles ranking points earned from his best four results over five weeks. The Men’s Challenge includes outdoor and indoor hard-court events at the M25 level and above around the world.

Both main draw and qualifying points earned from eligible tournaments count toward each player’s Challenge total. Results from the Cincinnati Open will not count toward the men’s or women’s standings.

Americans who otherwise earn direct entry into the US Open are not eligible, including players who can enter with a protected ranking. If the player with the highest number of Challenge points earns direct entry into the US Open, the wild card will go to the next eligible American in the standings.

The men’s Wild Card Challenge concludes Aug. 16. The 2026 US Open begins Aug. 23 in New York.
