Italy Crowned World Champions After 2025 Davis Cup Final Win Over Spain

Italy won the Davis Cup title for a 4th time with victory over Spain in Sunday's final. After titles in 2023 and 2024 they have become the first nation to win 3 consecutive Davis Cup titles since 1972 and the first nation to achieve the feat in the post-Challenge Round era.

It is also their first title win in Italy, having previously won in 1976 in Chile and in 2023 and 2024 in Malaga, Spain. They lost the only previous Davis Cup final they played in Italy, falling to Sweden in Milan in 1998.

After the Italian women won the Billie Jean King Cup by Gainbridge title in September, Italy have once again won both the men's and women's World Cup of Tennis in the same year, joining USA and Australia as the only nations to win both the Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup titles in the same year on multiple occasions and in consecutive years.

Matteo Berrettini defeated Pablo Carreno Busta 6-3 6-4 in the opening singles match before Flavio Cobolli recovered from a set down to defeat Jaume Munar 1-6 7-6(5) 7-5 to ignite ecstatic celebrations amongst Italy's players, staff and supporters for a third year in a row and in front of a sold-out arena.

Captain Filippo Volandri and his players – Cobolli, Berrettini, Lorenzo Sonego, Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori – were presented with the famous Davis Cup trophy by ITF President David Haggerty to a raucous response on court.

Italy had a perfect winning record all week, defeating Austria 2-0 in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, before beating Belgium 2-0 in the semifinals on Friday and Spain 2-0 for the title on Sunday.

David Haggerty, ITF President, said: "Every day of this year's Final 8 has been spectacular and today's final was a fitting way to conclude the 125th year of this prestigious competition. This has been a classic Davis Cup week - huge crowds, electric atmospheres and every team giving everything they have for their nations. I thank our partners at the FITP for helping us deliver such a fantastic event.

"Congratulations to Italy on becoming deserving world champions tonight by winning a third consecutive title, and to every other team that has helped provide such an incredible spectacle this week. Davis Cup always has been and always will be the premier team event in men’s tennis. This week has proven that once again."

Flavio Cobolli (ITA): "At the end I tried to play my game, take energy from the bench, from the crowd. I tried to stay positive also at the beginning of the second set, but it's not easy to play this kind of match. At the end I'm really happy because I played my best tennis in the crucial moment. It's something different for me to play on this team, for these guys. I try to play for them, not only for me. Also when the match wasn't on my part, my way, at the end I think every point about the team, not only for me. I think this was the key to make the difference in this match."

Matteo Berrettini (ITA): "I feel like every year is different for different reasons. First time [in 2023] I watched it from outside. I couldn't touch it and lift it. I used that kind of energy to come back and win it last year. This year I used the motivation to play here in Bologna during the summer when I wasn't feeling my best. I have to say the Captain, the Federation, Umberto Rianna, who is not here but is a big part of this team, helped me and always gave me the confidence to tell me if I was fit, I would have been considered, which I don't take for granted. It's a special feeling. I have to say that we have such a strong team, a lot of players that could have played. These guys (Bolelli and Vavassori) that played another unbelievable season in doubles. Again, I'm going to say the team is really strong because the connection is really strong between us. We know each other since a long time. It's just too nice to play with them."

Captain Filippo Volandri (ITA): "It's an amazing feeling. It's a really amazing sensation. We've won three Davis Cups, but this one is completely different in front of our crowd, in our country. I didn't cry for the first two, but I cried for this one because it means a lot for me. I have to only say thanks to these guys. They are amazing, the effort. This unbelievable trophy. I'm so proud. We all have to be proud of these guys."
