Has Novak Djokovic's Golden Grand Slam cemented his legacy?
Aug 05, 2024
Novak Djokovic snatched the gold medal at the Olympics in a thrilling final this weekend in Paris. The 37-year-old Serbian, the oldest tennis player ever to win the gold, took down Carlos Alcaraz in a tight match. In the end, the Djoker finally got the ‘Golden Slam’ after winning all four majors and an Olympic gold medal.
Djokovic beat Alcaraz 7-6(3), 7-6(2) on Court Philippe-Chatrier just eight weeks after undergoing surgery on his right knee. In an emotional speech, he said, "I don’t know what to say. I’m still in shock, honestly. I put my heart, my soul, my body, my family, my everything on the line to win Olympic gold at age 37. I finally did it.”

A gold medal at the Olympics — this was probably Djokovic's last chance at it — has eluded him for so long. Even though he can rest on his status as a 24-time Grand Slam champion, Djokovic's "GOAT" moniker will be even harder to dispute after this weekend.
According to ATPTour.com, "Djokovic owns 72 'Big Titles', which are a combination of Grand Slam championships, trophies at the Nitto ATP Finals and ATP Masters 1000 tournaments, and Olympic singles gold medals. The Serbian has claimed at least one Big Title in 16 of the past 18 seasons."

Furthermore, "No other player has won Olympic singles gold, a major and all nine Masters 1000 events. The Serbian owns the standalone men's record for championships at Grand Slams (24), Nitto ATP Finals (7) and Masters 1000s (40)."
Novak Djokovic, once again, has cemented himself in the history books. That said, it will be intriguing to see how things unfold in a few weeks at the US Open.
