A pair of Florida-based coaches, Alexandra Stevenson and Gaby Paz, highlight the latest issue of leading-edge instructional publication tennisplayer.net.

The new issue’s focus is a topic near and dear to the heart of any competitive tennis player: match management. “Pressure reveals so much,” said tennisplayer.net executive editor Joel Drucker, “so we knew it would be useful to provide information about how to thrive in it — not just mentally, but also from the technical and tactical sides.”

Stevenson, a former top-20 WTA pro and Wimbledon semifinalist who’s now coaching in Florida, offers sharp wisdom into the one shot a tennis player can completely control: the serve. “I’m not talking simply about getting the ball in the court,” writes Stevenson in her piece. “I’m talking about hitting big serves at key stages of a match — be it an ace, a service winner, or a serve that hits the right spot and opens up the court well enough for you to immediately take control of the rally.”

Paz, a former US Open junior finalist once ranked No. 230 in the world, offers keen insights into how to strike forehands effectively no matter what the situation. “Many believe the forehand breaks down more than the backhand,” writes Paz. “But it’s not that it’s weaker, it’s that we ask more from it. We rely on the forehand more, go bigger with it, and use it to finish points, so there’s less margin and more pressure. Because of that, when you’re tight, it’s often the first shot to go off.”

In addition, California-based coaches Brad Gilbert and Brad Stine explore perennial match management-related topics. Gilbert, coach of several Grand Slam title winners, including Florida-based Coco Gauff, and author of the tactical masterpiece Winning Ugly, tackles a difficult question: How do I beat someone I’ve never beaten? Stine, who worked with another Florida legend, Jim Courier, during his glory years and is now coaching Tommy Paul, closely explains how coaches prepare and manage their players through one match after another.
