Americans continue to battle at US Open
Sep 02, 2024
Sunday at the US Open was host to some thrilling tennis. Americans continue to advance although a few U.S. players didn't push through in Flushing Meadows yesterday.
The defending champ from Delray Beach, Coco Gauff, was dethroned by another American Emma Navarro. Meanwhile, former US Open finalists Alexander Zverev and Aryna Sabalenka (with a home in Miami) continued their push into the latter stages of the tournament.

Americans including Taylor Fritz (with a home in Miami) and Frances Tiafoe (with a home in Boca Raton) also advanced. Boca Raton residents Jessica Pegula and Tommy Paul look to continue their New York run today.
To recap what happened on Sunday, let's take a closer look at a few key highlights.

Americans Navarro and Gauff faced off and the defending champ fought valiantly but fell 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. Fritz took on 2022 US Open finalist Casper Ruud from Norway and, in the end, got the job done with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 victory.
Frances Tiafoe proudly beat Aussie Alexei Popyrin 6-4, 7-6(3), 2-6, 6-3 but American Brandon Nakashima got knocked out by Germany's Alexander Zverev who notched a convincing win (albeit with a slow start) 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-2.

Last year's finalist Aryna Sabalenka advanced with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Elise Mertens. But the match of the day (in my humble opinion) was a face-off between Bulgaria's Grigor Dimitrov and Russia's Andrey Rublev in a hard-fought five-setter, 6-3, 7-6, 1-6, 3-6.
As the action continues today, we're looking forward to Jannik Sinner vs. Tommy Paul later tonight — it's likely to be an all-out battle. If Paul can pull off the upset, he just might go all the way. That said, he's got a tough battle ahead.
