What's inside?

The September-October 2023 of Florida Tennis showcases our continuing efforts to redesign this iconic 31-year-old magazine. And the response has been fantastic. We've actually increased the number of advertisers in this issue — keep in mind, the prior issue was our biggest in the magazine's 31-year history.

Our cover story is an inspiration. As Captain of University of Virginia men's tennis, a Florida-based player, Alex Keifer, was able to lead his elite team to an NCAA title. But he initially experienced challenges. Exclusive interviews with Florida Tennis founder, Jim Martz, and USP President, Thomas Anderson, reveals what it takes to achieve the pinnacle of success in college tennis.

We also provide an in-depth overview of the USP College Tennis Showcase which averages about 100 college coaches looking to find the best junior players for their university tennis programs. How does it work? Check out our deep dive in this issue.

Meanwhile, Ed Krass' College Tennis Exposure Camp is coming up in Lakeland and he's also gearing up for another One-on-One Doubles Championship in St. Petersburg — we give you the latest on what he's planning.

Editor Jim Martz reviews three must-read tennis books. And iconic coach Rick Macci gives an exclusive interview to Martz about a promising junior player, Darwin Blanch, who happens to work out regularly with Carlos Alcaraz.

Macci also provide in-depth analysis on some of this year's US Open standouts Novak Djokovic, Daniil Medvedev, and Ben Shelton. And he discusses the last American to win the US Open (or any grand slam for that matter), Andy Roddick.

We cover the latest news on the much-anticipated Delray Beach Open and recap the USTA Boys National Clay Court Championships and profile one of its Florida-based winners.

Adam Ross highlights British tennis legend John Lloyd and his new book, Dear John: The John Lloyd Biography. And we're honored to have six pages of informative news from USTA Florida covering Hispanic Heritage Month, adaptive tennis, coaching updates, and updates on fall grants.

We preview the "Little Mo" Internationals coming to Palm Beach Gardens. Youth Tennis Foundation of Florida showcases some award-winning high school athletes on their way to play college tennis. And we provide a review of the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

Florida Tennis contributor Deborah Hobbs provides a fascinating overview of the legendary St. Petersburg Tennis CenterDr. Richard Cohen provides mental toughness tips for those in their teens. And we profile a pioneer in the Lake County tennis community, Mission Inn's Cesar Villarroel.

Ian Pyka, former Strength and Conditioning Coach of the New England Patriots and Florida Panthers, gives us his take on exercise with oxygen therapy (EWOT) training at Boca Cryo to achieve peak athletic performance.

We also provide the latest on other racquet sports too including big news that John McEnroe, Andre Agassi, Steffi Graff, and Maria Sharapova will be coming to the Hard Rock to play pickleball.

Enjoy the issue! And don't forget to check our blog for news updates 5x/week from Monday - Friday.
