USA sweeps Chinese Taipei in Davis Cup Qualifying First Round

Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram improved their Davis Cup doubles record to 7-2 together and clinched the U.S. Davis Cup team's berth into the second round of 2025 Qualifying, as the Americans advanced past Chinese Taipei in Tapei City with a 4-0 tie victory this weekend in the Qualifying First Round.

On the clinching doubles win, Tampa-based Austin Krajicek said, "Yeah, it was tough the whole match. I thought those guys played really well. We played a great game in the first set to get a break and thought we took care of our serve really well. And then in the second, it was just a classic doubles match, comes down to one or two points, and thought Rajeev hit a great return – we had a hustle point to get up a mini-break in the tiebreaker – and that’s one point that made the difference there. Could have gone either way, but I thought we played really well at the end and fortunately came through."

The former world doubles No. 1s defeated Ray Ho and Tung-Lin Wu, 6-4, 7-6(4), on Saturday to clinch the best-of-five matchup before Mackenzie McDonald added a 6-2, 6-3 win over Tsung-Hao Huang in a dead singles match.

Mackenzie McDonald said, "It’s great being back in Taiwan. I was here a couple months ago in the Challenger, but being back and being on the team, it’s a different atmosphere being with the guys, playing for your country. So I’m really grateful I got to play one match here and enjoy my time. I miss being on a team, so it’s really nice to experience that. You don’t get to do that much on tour. But I do love my team here as well in Asia, and we had a good trip."

The U.S. will now host Czechia in the Qualifying Second Round September 12-14, with specific date and site information to be confirmed. The Second Round winners then advance to the eight-nation Davis Cup Final 8 that will crown this year’s Davis Cup champion in November in Bologna, Italy.
