Toddler Tennis by Neal Feinberg: Building a Love for the Game from the Very Beginning
Jun 22, 2026
What if introducing tennis to a child didn't start with a racket and a full-sized court?
That's the question Neal Feinberg explores in his new book, Toddler Tennis. As President of Florida Indoor Tennis Club and a RSPA certified teaching professional, Feinberg believes children can begin developing the skills needed for tennis as early as two years old—not through traditional lessons, but through fun, movement, and imaginative play.
Rather than asking toddlers to rally over a net, Toddler Tennis focuses on activities that naturally build hand-eye coordination, balance, reflexes, movement, and confidence. Bubble wands, balloons, beach balls, obstacle games, and creative exercises become the tools that introduce young children to the fundamentals of the sport without the pressure of "playing tennis."
Feinberg's philosophy is simple: if an activity is too difficult, simplify it until success becomes possible. That early success helps children stay engaged, build confidence, and most importantly, enjoy being active. Throughout the book, he emphasizes that the goal isn't to create the next Grand Slam champion—it's to help children develop a lifelong love of movement, learning, and tennis.
The approach also recognizes today's reality. With countless distractions competing for a young child's attention, creating positive, interactive experiences has never been more important. By making tennis feel like play, parents and coaches can introduce the sport in a way that's exciting, encouraging, and age-appropriate.Beyond tennis itself, many of the activities featured in Toddler Tennis promote motor development, coordination, communication, problem-solving, and social interaction. The lessons encourage parents and children to learn together, creating meaningful moments that extend well beyond the court.
South Florida families will soon have the opportunity to experience the program firsthand. Feinberg's Toddler Tennis curriculum will be offered at the new Florida Indoor Tennis Club in Pompano Beach, giving parents an exciting new option to introduce their little ones to the game in a fun, supportive environment.
Whether a child eventually becomes a competitive player or simply grows up enjoying tennis as a lifelong activity, Feinberg believes the first experience should always be the same: positive, playful, and filled with smiles. If Toddler Tennis is any indication, that journey can begin much earlier than most people think.
