Miami Open presented by Itaú — Monday Update

The WTA’s first round gets underway Tuesday, and the Grandstand action will include a trio of Major champions. The second match of the day will see four-time Major winner Naomi Osaka facing qualifier Yulia Starodubtseva. Next up will be a battle of Grand Slam champions, as two-time Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova takes on 2020 Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin.

Tuesday’s schedule of main draw matches will feature the top half of the women’s draw. On Wednesday, the bottom half of both draws will be in action, featuring three-time Miami Open champion Victoria Azarenka, Olympic Gold Medalist Belinda Bencic, Australian Nick Kyrgios and Frenchman Gael Monfils.

Thursday’s play will see the first seeds in action, including No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, No. 3 Coco Gauff and defending champion Danielle Collins for the women while the men’s slate will include an all-American opening round match between Chris Eubanks and Reilly Opelka and a rematch of the 2024 ATP Next Finals title match as American 19-year-old Learner Tien seeks revenge against Brazilian 18-year-old Joao Fonseca.

Friday’s play will see the first matches for seeds in both draws, including six-time Miami Open champion Novak Djokovic in his first match here since 2019 plus fellow past champs Carlos AlcarazDaniil Medvedevand Iga Swiatek.
 
Be sure to catch up on the qualifying action as well. There were 36 matches contested Monday, and the 12 women’s winners earned spots in the main draw with their second win in as many days. Among the qualifiers is 19-year-old Linda Fruhvirtova, who defeated 37-year-old Laura Seigemund in Monday’s final round. Her reward is a match Tuesday against Claire Liu, who update two seeds on her way through qualifying into the main draw.

The ATP qualifying round will conclude Tuesday, with 12 players looking to punch their ticket for the main draw.  Among the notable matches is a battle between former college standouts Tristan Boyer (Stanford) and Jacob Fernley (TCU) while 21-year-old American Ethan Quinn will face No. 1 seed Camilo Ugo Carabelli
