Miami Open presented by Itaú — March 20 Update

It was a thrilling Thursday as the Miami Open presented by Itaú men’s first round concluded and the Stadium crowd was electric for a three-set thriller in which Brazilian 18-year-old Joao Fonseca rallied from a set down to defeat American 19-year-old Learner Tien.

Meanwhile, women’s seeds made their Miami Open debut yesterday, and it was impressive starts from No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka and No. 3 Coco Gauff who lost a total of three games. American 20-year-old Ashlyn Krueger was responsible for the biggest upset of the day, winning in three sets over No. 7 Elena Rybakina, who had reached the finals in each of the last two years here. Danielle Collins opened her title defense to close the evening.

In addition, three other Miami Open champions will also be in action in the Stadium with Iga Swiatek and Daniil Medvedev playing during the day and Carlos Alcaraz set to close out the night. Before Alcaraz takes the court, Australian Open winner Madison Keys, the fifth seed, will play her first 2025 Miami match.

We have a fantastic Friday in store as some big names are appearing today. The quest for seven begins this afternoon for Novak Djokovic as the six-time Miami Open champion plays his first match at Hard Rock Stadium when he faces Australian Rinky Hijikata.

And all of the action sets up a big day on Saturday. Tomorrow’s afternoon lineup will see men’s top seed Alexander Zverev take to the court while Frances Tiafoe is due to headline the night session as the men conclude their second round. For the women, it will be the start of round three, with all of Thursday’s winners back in action.
