Freddy Azucey's Honest Approach to Player Development at Extreme Tennis Academy

Extreme Tennis Academy has become one of South Florida's most respected training environments by combining high-level coaching with a family-oriented atmosphere. During a recent visit to the academy, Florida Tennis Magazine spoke with CEO and Head Coach Freddy Azucey about his coaching philosophy, the academy's multicultural environment, and the values that have guided his career.

One of the first things visitors notice at Extreme Tennis Academy is the diversity of its players. Juniors from Latin America, Asia, and across the United States train together every day, creating an environment that exposes athletes to different cultures and playing styles.

"Our main focus is bringing players from abroad," Azucey said. "Many of them are looking for college opportunities, and through the academy we help them find universities where they can study and play tennis at the same time."

That commitment to helping players extends beyond the tennis court. Azucey knows firsthand that talent alone doesn't always determine a player's future.

Originally from the Dominican Republic, he developed into one of the country's top juniors and earned a place on the Dominican Davis Cup team. While he later pursued a professional career, financial realities ultimately led him toward coaching, an experience that continues to shape the advice he gives young players today.

"I tried to play professionally, but I had to stop because of financial circumstances," Azucey said. "That's something that happens to many players. They have the talent, but unfortunately they can't go any further because of the economic situation."

Rather than promising every junior a professional career, Azucey encourages families to see college tennis as an outstanding opportunity.

"Our recommendation is for players to focus on school, finish high school, go to college, earn their degree, and then try professional tennis," he said. "Not everyone at 15 or 16 has the talent to become a professional. Very few do."

That realistic mindset carries over into his coaching philosophy, where honesty plays a central role.

"I believe in honesty," Azucey said. "As coaches, we have to be honest with our players. You never tell a player they can't become a professional, but you do tell them they have to work every single day and understand how difficult the journey will be."

At Extreme Tennis Academy, that philosophy applies equally to everyone. Players are grouped by ability rather than age, and every athlete receives the same level of attention regardless of ranking or background.

"There is no special treatment for anyone here," Azucey said. "You can be extremely talented, but everyone receives the same attention."

The academy's location inside the JCC also provides players with access to first-class amenities, including tennis courts, a fitness center, a swimming pool, and a safe environment that supports both training and recovery.

"This isn't just a tennis academy," Azucey said. "We're a family. We want everyone to feel supported, and whatever they need, we're always here to help."
