The Boca Raton: A Look Inside the Resort’s Impressive Tennis Program

Florida Tennis had the chance to hit the courts at The Boca Raton, and it didn’t disappoint. Two of the resort’s pros, former college player, Izzy Carey and Zane Khan, former ATP pro, gave us a firsthand look at the level of instruction that makes this place such a standout in Florida’s tennis scene. 

Zane Khan focused on one of the game’s trickiest skills—the return of serve. He pinpointed a mistake most players make. “The main thing I see wrong with the returner is they don’t have a good unit turn, you want to turn in sync with the lower body,” Zane explained.

From there, he dug deeper into balance and weight transfer. “A lot of times they don’t transfer their weight — they stay in place,” he said. “You want to stay down, transferring the weight with a compact swing — and really turn quick.” 

Zane’s theme throughout the session was simplicity. “You want to try to simplify the return as much as possible, because when the other side is serving very fast, you don’t have much time to react,” he said. 

Next up: the serve with Izzy. “I want you to get in that momentum where you’re just getting in the flow, moving your hips,” she explained. Izzy moved through a progressive approach to teaching the serve—first with the sock, then throwing a ball, and finally translating that same motion with a racquet in hand. By layering each step, Izzy built a foundation that felt natural, effortless, and safe.

By focusing on body mechanics, rhythm, and repetition, they remind players that great tennis skills start with strong fundamentals.
